CAFTCAD’s Land Acknowledgement
The portion of Turtle Island (North America) we now call Canada has been home since time immemorial to the ancestors of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit peoples. As a national organization, CAFTCAD operates in various corners of Turtle Island and we acknowledge that many of us at CAFTCAD are settlers working and living on traditional territories of the First People of this land.
In addition, we acknowledge the land in which CAFTCAD’s home office is located and where many of our events take place is the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis people.
We also recognize that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit. It is also in the Dish With One Spoon treaty territory, which was made between the Anishinaabeg, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and Peoples, Europeans and all newcomers have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect.
As our organization has satellite members from coast to coast, we acknowledge that many of our members work on traditional and unceded territories of a variety of Indigenous people. In August of 2021, CAFTCAD staff, members, and leadership participated in a workshop led by Indigenous artists and Elders to discuss and develop not only our land acknowledgement as an organization, but also our own personal land acknowledgement.
