Special Effects Costuming

In this two day intensive course participants will learn about the fundamentals of working in special effects costuming in film and television from professionals with extensive experience working in this field.

The weekend will be a mixture of lecture, demonstration and hands-on learning. It is designed to give those who would like to pursue this specialist area of costuming with the knowledge and practical experience to do so.

The weekend will cover the following areas:

  • Overview of special effects costuming (including tools, safety and PPE fitting)

  • Sculpting and molding (including lecture, life cast demonstration and practical exercise in molding, leaving to set overnight)

  • Pulling the mold (from previous day)

  • Leathers and alternative building (including leather, foam, neoprene, Worbla and thermoplastics)

  • Demonstrations in thermoplastics and wet-molding

  • Working with leather (including practical exercises in leather covering and hardware)

  • On Set Working with special effects costumes lecture and demonstration
