This 90 minute illustrated online lecture will follow the changing silhouette of the latter half of the 20th century capturing the essence of fashionable dress for film and television. From the post war revival of a Victorian silhouette to the aerodynamic sleekness of a rocketship in the early 60s to an even more space-age futuristic look of the late 1960s, the reaction to modernity with a return to naturalism in the early 70s and the effects of the sexual revolution in the late 70s. The 80s and 90s is a stream of high fashion revivalis from past eras influenced by Punk and Goth subcultures and the rise of Globalism. Alongside these leading styles are the rise of teen culture, and fast fashion.
The talk by Jonathan Walford, curator of the Fashion History Museum in Cambridge, Ontario will include a selection of films that have done excellent jobs of recreating period fashion, and a few that maybe could have done better. These films will act as an inspiration and a warning for costume designers today, especially as more films look towards a pre technological era for setting stories.
